CLASS TITLE: "Exploring the Figure Through
Palette Knife Painting"

Class Description
This class will focus on portraying the figure by challenging techniques and mediums in a contemporary
scope. While the instructor will have some photographic resources available, students may choose to work from their own images. We will explore flat planes of color, high-key chromatic exploration, mixed media implementations, and psychological expression. Initial classes will focus on bringing concepts to fruition from initial sketches to final pieces.
The instructor will discuss with each individual student their ideas, perform demonstrations and provide tips on developing and completing their projects. Each class builds upon the previous class addressing varying steps in indirect and direct painting methodologies and techniques.
Required Materials
OIL or Acrylic paint - each student will determine which medium suits them best. Once registered students wishing to purchase materials can request a comprehensive list of recommended paints.
• A variety of palette knives is highly recommended
• Paper towels or rags
• Palette or 12x16 Grey Disposable Palette Pad

About the instructor:
Instructor Thomas Legaspi has studied art at St John’s University, The Art Students League and The New York Academy of Art . He also has been lecturing and teaching studio art as well as art history and art appreciation courses at various colleges and institutions for the last 15 years. He has most recently been exhibiting with the Dacia Gallery in The Lower East Side, New York City.
