Iris Machado

   The Brooklyn Bridge, The River Café, One Main Street, One Hanson Place, and The Ice Cream Factory, are a few of the paintings in my Brooklyn Series.

   The Big Clock on the Tower, and the Park with the Eagles are two of my most cherished memories of living in South Oxford, Brooklyn in 1951. When I first arrived in NYC from Puerto Rico, I did not know the names or the significance of these landmarks or The Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower and the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument in Fort Greene Park. I did know that my favorite thing to do at age 4 was to paint.

   I always wanted to paint, but my parents did not encourage me to pursue it as a career. Eventually I got my degree in art education from Hunter College and taught art for 31 years until my retirement.  In 2007, I finally embraced my life long goal – to paint.

   Most of my paintings are based on photos I have taken.

I reject accurately painted landscapes in favor of invented scenes. The application of the paint and the juxtaposition of the colors are paramount in my artistic expression.  I paint for the love of painting. It is all about color, paint, brush strokes and light. It is a visual orchestration culminating in a mood, an expression, a slice of life.

   Artists I admire most are: Edward Hopper, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla and Paul G. Oxborough.
