Karmen Elsen

"Hailing from the New York Metro area, Karmen Elsen is an emerging artist whose life experiences have brought her into contact with people from the world over, which in turn has influenced her desire to create narrative artwork. In her portrait, figure and wild life paintings and drawings, she tries to capture both a moment in time as well as the important inner essence of the subject.

Initially an impressionistic watercolor artist, during the past few years, Ms. Elsen has been developing a body of work in oils, dry media and pastel, along the way trending towards classical realism especially since undertaking study with Sadie Valeri via her Atelier. Karmen hopes to use these skills to produce work about contemporary life in the classical realist tradition.

In addition to Ms. Valeri, Karmen Elsen has studied with Marc Josloff, Rob Silverman, Ricky Mujica, Dominique Medici and Dan Slapo. Karmen has also participated in numerous workshops at the Art Students League, the National Art League, the Art League of Nassau County and the Art League of Long Island.

Volunteerism is an integral part of Karmen’s artistic life and she feels strongly about giving to the community and getting people involved in art. To that end, she currently holds several positions at the National Art League in Douglaston NY. She is the Membership and Publicity Chairperson and Co-Chairs an Annual Themed Exhibit. Along with her husband Paul David Elsen, Karmen runs the Saturday morning live model Pose/Sketch class for the NAL."
