About the Instructor

Maxine Nodel is a versatile, award-winning visual artist who received her B.F.A. from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. She works in pencil, charcoal, marker, oil, and acrylics and sells her work nationally and internationally. Her work, as a child and teen, was exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the Salmagundi Club in NYC. From 2013-2015, her work was on public display outside the DIA in Beacon, NY as part of the Hudson Valley arts initiative, the Beekman Street Artist Banner project. Maxine was recently invited by the Edward Hopper House Museum to give a gallery talk about her drawing project, 'Eyes On America'.

   

Maxine has also exhibited at the Highline Loft Gallery in Chelsea, NY, the Upstream Gallery in Westchester, the Catalyst Gallery in Beacon, the Riverfront Gallery in Yonkers, the Blue Door Gallery in Yonkers where she won first-place for her intricate design drawings in 2015, and at the National Art League (NAL) where she’s won gold medal, first-place, and merit awards for painting and drawing.

 

Maxine teaches drawing and mixed media design classes at the NAL where her father, Norman Nodel, served as the NAL President for over 15 years during the 1960s and 70s. Students of all levels evolve and sharpen their realistic, impressionistic, or design drawing skills in a creative and relaxing atmosphere using graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, ink, markers, and other media. Sessions consist of mini-demonstrations along with personalized guidance as students create beautiful small or big works at their own pace using subject matter they’re passionate about: people, animals, still-lives, landscapes, imaginative designs, and mixed-media imagery.  (Skills/concepts covered include: shading, line work, negative/positive space design, stippling, patterns, texture, reflection, composition, perspective, 3-D illusion).

 

Maxine is also the founder and former principal of a successful, award-winning, visual arts high school in NYC that she created with a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant. She designed the school to serve economically disadvantaged children in the Bronx who love visual art but lack the grades to enter the city’s specialized art high schools.
