About the Instructor

Joan Bleyer Lazarus has been an artist for over fifty years. She learned her craft in the atelier way, seeking out artists who could teach her what she needed to know.

Her first teacher was Frank Zizzo, who was trained by Frank Reilly and taught his method of portrait painting and figure painting. Her next teacher was Mariam Dougenous who taught watercolor and amazing color. Her next teacher was Robert Yasuda, a minimalist artist, currently exhibiting in the art world, who taught at Long Island C W Post. He helped her to become a conceptual artist by understanding what was important to her and what she wanted to “say”.  His vast knowledge of art history helped strengthen her knowledge of where she fit in the art world.

Joan had also taken art classes at Adelphi where she was an English major, at the Huntington Township Art League now the Art League of Long Island and at many workshops. Joan has shown in many exhibitions throughout her fifty year career. Most recently she has curated and exhibited in the group shows of the Eclectic Collective.

Joan's art includes realism and conceptualism.  She works in oil, acrylic, pencil, watercolor, collage, assemblage. She has been teaching in alternative spaces for over thirty years, including the Lynbrook Recreation Department, the Department of Senior Enrichment for the Town of Hempstead, and Lynbrook Adult Education.
